50 Things: Afternoon Naps

3 Oct

When I was little, it was close to impossible to get me to take a nap.  I was convinced that something was going on that everyone surely wanted me to miss, thus I must be awake for everything.  I sense the same logic in my son when I try to get him to nap.  He goes down with much effort on my end, and wakes up looking around frantically to make sure he didn’t miss anything.

My son refusing to take a nap in his bed.

In adulthood, you wouldn’t have to try very hard to get me to take a nap.  I need to take a break from the day, and rest my eyes.  Let my worries slip away for a short time, and just take a breath.  By take a breath, I mean throw myself sideways crossed our bed and drool uncontrollably on the comforter.

A friend of mine would get her child to take a nap by telling him, “you don’t have to sleep, just go to your room and relax, and recharge your batteries.”  After all that is the point right?  I don’t think it makes me a bad parent, or anyone a bad person for that matter, for wanting to recharge their batteries.

So whether it be taking a nap and drooling wherever your head lands, or just sitting down and relaxing your body and mind, I think it’s a great thing to try for a few days.  Relax, charge your batteries, and take in everything that your children are convinced they are missing.  I mean really, it’s not like the carnival is rolling into town, Kids.  Relax 🙂
